This little gadget is a light-up mirror powered by your USB port. It seems that USB power is replacing mains power for a lot of products these days. I actually think this one could be rather practical for a girl geek like me – not that I’d be putting on makeup with it, since I don’t ever wear makeup, but it would be nice to have a little mirror handy during all those hours I sit in front of the computer every day. I also really like that the base of it is a photo frame, though it’s not clear how easy it would be to swap out pictures. Still, for $15, it’s rather cute.

I guess this was made because women need an easier way to organize their makeup gear, am I right, Avon? The Miss Portable Gadget pocket “knife” has cute features, but doesn’t seem very useful. The knife, scissors, and mirror are probably not too bad, but I have never had much luck with those nail files, those tweezers are utterly useless, and the makeup brush is too dinky to be used for anything. But hey, it has cute little rhinestones, so what more do you want for $10?

It turns out Sephora, the beauty store, has a whole line of products called Piiink. All of the products are made in France, and they say everything is inspired by international trends. Most of the packaging is pink, even if the items aren’t; the $6 My Magiiic Mascara is actually two tubes, one with black mascara and one with silver glitter, combined into a single pink unit. Also $6 is the limited-edition My Phosphorescent Kiiit which comes with glow-in-the-dark mascara and nail polish. I wonder how many Sephora customers can spell “phosphorescent” while they’re applying the products? Anyway, this is a definite appeal to hip young females, though the marketing doesn’t quite strike me as for the kawaii target demographic…it’s just for too-cool-for-you girls who like pink.
