Pinkwashing

From the Think Before You Pink campaign:

Pinkwasher: (pink’-wah-sher) noun. A company that purports to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribbon campaign, but manufactures products that are linked to the disease.

This is an excellent point. As much as we here at PinkBlog (okay, me, there’s only one of me) love that everything under the sun is now available in pink, we really have to admit that sometimes that 1% donation to a breast cancer fund is not at all practical or even helpful. I’ve seen small print where companies say “up to $10,000 will be donated” – which is to say, if enough people buy the pink whatzits, then the rest above $10k is pure profit for the company. You think you’re doing something good, but read the fine print.

On a related note, the Buy (Less) Crap people focus on the (RED) campaign and help you to give money directly without consuming.

Search by Color

You can now search Google Images by color! As an example, here is a search for the word “cat” with the color pink applied. I’m kind of surprised there’s not more Pink Panther there. It does a really good job recognizing colors, too – there’s nothing on there that isn’t some shade of pink.

Pinkwashers

Put a Lid on It According to Think Before You Pink, a “pinkwasher” is:

A company that purports to care about breast cancer by promoting a pink ribbon campaign, but manufactures products that are linked to the disease.

In particular, the campaign references Yoplait yogurt, which is made with an artificial growth hormone that has been linked to breast cancer. They’ve already convinced Yoplait to get rid of the hormone by the end of August, and I think next they’re turning their attention to cosmetics makers which use phthalates and parabens in their products. It’s apparently only “pinkwashing” if the maker promotes a breast cancer pink ribbon campaign while simultaneously using these products…but this kind of hypocrisy is worth turning a spotlight on.

Think Pink

Here’s an interesting concept: Think Pink. In this case, “pink” is not a reference to the color specifically, but more about the feeling that the color creates. It’s about being a successful woman, dreaming big dreams, and upbeat, positive thinking. It’s like a self-help course that revolves around the way the color pink makes you feel! This is very cool, I need to read through the whole site. You should too!

Pink Chaddi Campaign

Pink Chaddi Campaign The Pink Chaddi (underwear) campaign is designed to draw attention to the abuse of Indian women who are physically beaten when they go to pubs. Their website has contact information and tells how to send your pink chaddi to Sri Ram Sena, a militant religious organization that is reportedly anti Valentine’s Day. More about their antics here.
