Why Pink

Much to the dismay of Shiny Shiny, everything comes in pink these days. Shiny Shiny asserts that “companies will never tire of making gadgets in pink” and decries manufacturers for attempting to corner the female market simply by making things pink, but this is Pink Blog so you won’t find that attitude here! But given how opposed some gadget bloggers are to The Pink - Gizmodiva even talks about the power of Pink - I thought it was appropriate to talk about why pink.

The easiest way to explain my pink obsession is: writing this blog makes me happy. I enjoy looking through pink products and sharing pink finds, and when I am feeling down I even skim through my own blog and look at all the pink things. I think companies release products in pink not only to appeal to women - the “if it’s pink, women will buy it” philosophy - but because women like pink. In other words, they’re not just trying to appeal to women…they know women will like pink things. In the world of color therapy, pink is “open-hearted,” approachable, soothing, and compassionate. Yes, companies are attempting to capitalize on this view of pink, but the only reason they keep releasing products in pink is because people keep buying them.

I’m not sure exactly when pink gadgets became all the rage. The Motorola RAZR was released in a hot pink version in December 2005; it wasn’t the first pink gadget but it can still only have been within the past few years that pink became popular for gadgets. How long will the craze last? I think it’s here to stay. In the past, gadgets were gray, black, or beige. Now that they come in all colors of the rainbow, I don’t predict anybody will want to go back to boring electronics and equipment. Not all companies provide a full spectrum of color for their toys, and if they’re only going to offer a few, they will stick to tried-and-true pink for one of them - it sells. I seriously believe pink is here for the long haul.
